About
Lucinda is based in South London. She studied painting at West Surrey College of Art and Design and took an MA in Public Art at Chelsea College of Art.
She works in oil on canvas, gouache or acrylic on paper and on objects such as furniture, boxes, trays and screens. Most of her paintings are of figures, either solitary or in groups, and she will create a visual story within a painting expressing feelings of isolation or friendship and how a gathering of people relate to each other. Her work uses colour and pattern to create images of these figures in a richly decorative style. Inspired by historic dress, fashion and fabric, her characters often wear exuberant and ornately embellished costume.
Another influence on Lucinda is the hamlet where she grew up, deep in the Wiltshire countryside where the rural environment and wildlife were important aspects of daily life. These have frequently informed her work in ideas and imagery.
In addition to paintings Lucinda produces lino and woodblock prints and makes mosaics.
Lucinda has exhibited widely including solo shows at the Wigmore Hall in London, Charleston Farmhouse in Sussex and Salisbury Arts Centre.
Group shows have included the John Player Portrait Award Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, South Bank Picture Show at the Royal Festival Hall and ‘Colourful Women’ at Leicester City Art Gallery.
When a student and soon after graduating Lucinda won:
- West Surrey College of Art and Design: Italian Prize for Painting 1984
- Barbican Arts Group: Drawing Prize 1986
- South Bank Picture Show: Third Prize 1987
